Duku Challenge is under our Breast Cancer Health Initiative Dukutober! Duku is a local slang term which means headwrap. This annual event invites individuals, families, and organizations to wear a Duku headwrap throughout October to show solidarity with cancer patients who lose their hair during cancer treatment and raise awareness.
The Duku Challenge is taking the world by storm. With over 20,000 national and international. What was a local breast cancer awareness initiative turned out to address all cancers. Some people wear dukus for those that have died, others for their beloved ones still fighting and many for themselves. In Zambia, cancer is surrounded by a lot of myths and silence. Through the real-life stories shared, the silence is being broken, many people have gone for screening and testimonials have been shared and patients are encouraged to adhere to treatment and hope is shared.
We invite you to participate by posting photos of you waring a Duku of your choice on social media with the hashtag #Dukutober. #Dukuchallenge. #zambiancancersociety and challenge your friends to do the same. You can also support the cause by purchasing Dukus and T-shirts from the Zambian Cancer Society, with proceeds go towards supporting cancer patients and their families. Be a part of Zambia’s biggest and most exciting headwrap challenge and help us spread the message of hope and resilience.
