The Cancer Smart Youth Podcast
We aim to break the silence on cancer by creating a Zambian youth-oriented podcast to provide support, share experiences, raise awareness, and inspire hope for adolescents and youths battling cancer.
Background: Cancer is a pervasive disease, many of us know of a friend, relative, or workmate who has been affected by it. According to Global Cancer Observatory, it affects 15296 people annually in Zambia and 9770 lose their lives. For those diagnosed at the prime of their lives, life seem stagnant with uncertainty for the future. More than 50% of cancers are presented in late stages which reduces the survival rate. One of the main reasons to late presentation is due to lack of knowledge. (NATIONAL GUIDELINES FOR EARLY DIAGNOSIS OF BREAST CANCER IN ZAMBIA 2019).
The Cancer Smart Youth Podcast will help break the silence on cancer through advocating for early diagnosis and encourage young patients and survivors who often face social isolation, emotional distress, and a lack of age-appropriate resources.
